"The version banned by American TV!" blares the video box, and after watching with eyes peeled for British nasties that wouldn't wear well on our Puritan tube, I've come to the conclusion that the extra scenes must have been "banned" due to time considerations not content. Ah well, this never-before-seen version of the 1978 satirical take on the Beatles, was the brainchild of Monty Python-er Eric Idle, who stars as one of the Rutles and as the harried documentary interviewer. A decent enough mockumentary, with many songs that are obviously re-written Beatles songs, there are a handful of tunes here by songwriter Neil Innes that could darn well have been Beatle hits. With Beatlemania about to erupt again with the upcoming video release of The Beatles Anthology, this is worth picking up. (R. Pitman)
