From the same company that gave us Travels in Europe with Rick Steves (VL-7/95), this six-part series features actress Shari Belafonte on a whirlwind trip through Southern Florida, Mexico and the Caribbean. Since my wife, Anne, and I are planning to rough it on an off the beaten track, backpack laden trek (okay, we'll be on a Disney cruise ship) to the Bahamas soon, we cued up the episode entitled Jamaica, Miami & the Bahamas. Comprised of two half-hour programs, the first segment on "Miami, Key West and Nassau" offers viewers a peek at Miami's Art Deco revival, pops into Key West (where viewers see Hemingway's house and visit the cemetery, where the headstone epitaphs often have a humorous slant, such as "I Told You I Was Sick"), and strolls through the tourist markets in Nassau. The second half-hour takes viewers to Belafonte's father's boyhood home, Jamaica. While Shari Belafonte is an amiable and personable host, her narration often lacks the insider tidbits commonly found in Rick Steves' videos, and the idea of covering Miami, Key West and Nassau in a half-hour is a bit ludicrous. Still, the lure of fun in the sun has always drawn vacationers south, and the Travels in Mexico & the Caribbean series, which aired on public television, does offer a representative taste of some of the hottest (no pun intended) travel destinations in the Western hemisphere. Other titles in the series include: Puerto Rico & the U.S. Virgin Islands; Martinique, St. Kitts & Antigua; Cuernavaca & Oaxaxa; Merida, Cancun & Belize; and Mexico City & Guadalajara. Recommended.
