If you think advertising slogans for condoms and sanitary napkins are tacky today, consider this jewel from the 1920s: "Let's turn every armpit into a charmpit." In The Roaring Twenties, one of 20 new titles in this outstanding survey of U.S. history from the beginning to just beyond WWII, viewers will be introduced to a decade of incredible change: it would open with President Harding's "return to normalcy" campaign and end with the dawning of the Great Depression. In between, Americans would witness the rise of the movies, jazz, and the consumer society. Women got the vote, people discovered that they had body odor, and the Cotton Club flourished in Harlem (though only white patrons could enjoy the black performers). The Babe cracked homers, Lucky Lindy crossed the Atlantic, and Clarence Darrow put up an admirable (though ultimately unsuccessful) defense of John Scopes' teaching of evolution in the classroom in the infamous "Monkey trial." Intermixing still and archival footage (with enhanced sound effects), excellent commentary from academic historians, and a stirring musical soundtrack, this superb series will offer students and general interest viewers a solid grounding in American history while providing immensely entertaining insights beyond the standard textbook fare (during the 1920s, for example, we learn that cars were thought to be "irreligious" by many, precisely because the traditional Sunday drive did not lead to the church doors but to picnics and sightseeing). Other titles in the series include: Three Worlds Meet, Slavery & Freedom, Reconstruction & Segregation, The Great War, and World War II. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. Aud: E, J, H, P. (R. Pitman)
