A quirky political parable, this Romanian tale of a genteel British bride (Kristin Scott-Thomas) and her diminutive military husband's banishment to a remote settlement gets off to a slow start. But when her husband is ordered to execute a group of Bulgarian peasants in retaliation for a bandit attack, and Scott-Thomas tries to intercede, the story becomes all too familiar and timeless, as the indifferent cruelty of petty bureaucracy rears is ugly head. An optional purchase for larger collections. (R. Pitman)
