A stylish Brit B&W entry, this medieval slice-of-life is based on a pair of letters concerning the real 14th-century anchoress Christine Carpenter, a woman who saw visions of the Virgin Mary, and allowed herself to be shut in a walled-up enclosure from which she dispensed advice to the extremely mystical peasants. Meticulously faithful to the scholastic accounts of the period, with an often wicked sense of humor, this is recommended for larger independent and foreign film collections. (R. Pitman)
