I'm still trying to figure out what--according to the box--the NY Times meant by a "rip-roaring adventure." The true story of Phoolan Devi, a lower caste "bandit" in India, this is the relentlessly brutal story of a woman who was raped repeatedly and beaten from the age of 11 up. As an adult, she went around torturing her torturers, shooting innocent men, and stealing people blind. Well-filmed, but unpleasant, and hardly "rip-roaring," with gaudy melodrama in both the acting and the dialogue. (R. Pitman)[DVD Review--January 25, 2005--Koch Lorber, 119 min., in Hindi w/English subtitles, not rated, $24.98--Making its second appearance on DVD, 1994's Bandit Queen is presented in a very good full screen transfer with a solid Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, but with no extras. Bottom line: a film that split critics, Bandit Queen looks and sounds good on DVD, but remains an optional purchase.]
