Peter Greene delivers an effectively creepy performance as Peter Winter, a schizophrenic looking for his daughter, who was put up for adoption while he was in a padded room. Tailed by a relentless detective who believes that Peter is a child serial-killer, the film raises more questions and ambiguities than it can comfortably resolve, making for a simply unpleasant viewing experience, as opposed to a truly challenging one. (R. Pitman)[DVD Review—Oct. 3, 2006—Criterion, 79 min., not rated, $29.95—Making its second appearance on DVD, 1993's Clean, Shaven sports a great transfer with Dolby Digital mono sound. DVD extras include audio commentary featuring filmmaker Steven Soderbergh interviewing the film's director Lodge Kerrigan, “A Subjective Assault” new video essay written and narrated by critic Michael Atkinson (10 min.), downloadable MP3 files of the film's original soundtrack, a booklet featuring an essay by film critic Dennis Lim, and trailers. Bottom line: a fine extras package for an uneven film.]
