Even though Batman Forever grossed twice the boxoffice, this excellent nail-biter set on board a nuclear submarine easily boasted three times the thrills. Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington are outstanding as a hard-nosed captain and an Ivy League educated executive officer, respectively, who are ordered to respond to a renegade Russian politico's threat to attack the U.S. The two men disagree over how the U.S.S. Alabama should respond, and the fates of Russia and the U.S. hang in the balance. Fans of The Hunt for Red October will love this one. (R. Pitman)[DVD Review—May 30, 2006—Hollywood, 123 min., not rated, $19.99—Making its second appearance on DVD, 1995's Crimson Tide (Unrated Extended Cut) features a nice transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound and includes nine extra minutes of deleted scenes incorporated into the film, a 20-minute “making-of” featurette, a 10-minute “All Access” on-the-set featurette, three deleted scenes (3 min.), and trailers. Bottom line: the less than 10 minutes of extended footage doesn't add much, but the extras package is an improvement over the original bare-bones release.]
