Based on a true story, this Oscar-nominated epic about Adolf Daens, a 19th-century Belgian priest who spoke out against atrocious labor practices in the factories, is a sweeping epic, reminiscent of the 1993 French film Germinal. Yet, while it shares some of the socialist romanticism of that film, it doesn't devolve into total melodrama. On the contrary, the work of Daens is an inspirational reminder that, while socialism may be a dying political system, the socialist impulse often leads to true reform. Highly recommended. (R.
