Anyone who has listened to the audiobook version of Stephen King's bestseller (expertly read by Frances Sternhagen) will recognize where the inspiration for Kathy Bates' accent came from: but, make no mistake, Bates' performance is another winner. As the titular character in this Maine mystery about a woman first accused of murdering her husband, then accused of whacking her employer, Vera ("kiss-my-backcheeks") Donovan, Bates is a powerhouse. She gets good support from Jennifer Jason Leigh as her daughter Selena, and director Taylor Hackford who creatively melds scenes from the present and past to slowly peel away the horror at the center of the tale.
