John Cassavettes' improvisational works can be tough slogging. Case in point is this 1968 effort with John Marley and Lynn Carlin as an unhappily married couple who spend a night away from the marital mattress: he with prostitute Gena Rowlands, she with aging hippy Seymour Cassel. Some powerful scenes can't quite compensate for the fact that this film is too long by half. Film buffs and cinema studies professors will appreciate, but real people won't care for it. (R. Pitman)
