Ironically, a story larger than life finds its best realization on the small screen rather than the big in this TV miniseries based on Jonathan Swift's 17th century classic satire. Credit screenwriter Simon Moore for wisely intercutting the story of Lemuel Gulliver's (Ted Danson) return with his outlandish tales of places where tiny people, giants, or horses run the country. By seamlessly moving between Gulliver's present and past, director Charles Sturridge overcomes the main problem of previous adaptations (the episodic quality of the novel). Among other standouts in the supporting cast, look for a great comic bit by Peter O' Toole as the king of the little Lilliputians (upon seeing Gulliver for the first time, he drunkenly proclaims: "My! He's a whopper!). Add to that the superb special effects which easily rival Hollywood's best. Highly recommended. (R. Pitman)[DVD Review—Sept. 2, 2008—Genius, 187 min., not rated, $14.95—Making its first appearance on DVD, 1995's Gulliver's Travels (Special Edition) sports a decent transfer and Dolby Digital stereo. DVD extras include a 24-minute “making-of” featurette, an interview with costar Omar Sharif (8 min.), and trailers. Bottom line: a decent extras package for an excellent adaptation.]
