Yet another disappointment in the summer rash of cyber-thrillers, Hackers offers the hackneyed tale of teen hackers going up against the corporate might of...Fisher Stevens, who--although he's planning to do some really bad stuff--is about as menacing as Barney. The genius teens vs. idiot adults plot is the oldest suck-up device to the youth-going movie public in the book. But the music keeps a good beat, the light show is fun, and 12-15 year-olds are going to think this was made just for them...unfortunately, for the rest of us, the kids are right. [Blu-ray Review—Aug. 25, 2015—Shout! Factory, 105 min., PG-13, $24.98—Making its first appearance on Blu-ray, 1995's Hackers features a fine transfer and a DTS-HD stereo soundtrack. Extras include “The Keyboard Cowboys: A Look Back at Hackers” retrospective featurette with director Iain Softley and costars Fisher Stevens, Matthew Lillard, and Penn Jillette, along with crew members (64 min.), and trailers. Bottom line: nostalgia for thirtysomethings, this ‘90s teen hit looks sharp on Blu-ray.] (R. Pitman)
