Disappointing multigenerational epic of Sanchez family's emigration to California features a good performance by Jimmy Smits, but suffers from Hallmark Card-itis during the first half and stereotypical portrayals in the second half. Edward James Olmos' ironic voiceover narration is the only thing that undercuts some of the more mawkish and melodramatic moments. Too, the fact that nearly half of the film is spoken in Spanish (without subtitles) is irritating. Director Gregory Nava's El Norte is much better. (R. Pitman)
