"For 52, bon apetit was also bon voyage," sing the Little Sisters of Hoboken in reference to a little accident: 52 of their sisters contracted botulism from a bad batch of Sister Julia (Child of God)'s soup. Unfortunately only 48 were buried, which is why the sisters act in this somewhat ribald variety show/fund raiser; they need to buy more property and move the last four sisters (currently residing in the convent freezer) into more hallowed ground. To suggest these are "twisted sisters" is a bit of an understatement, but this hilarious satire of all things Catholic before a live audience (including real nuns) is laugh out loud funny and often quite sweet. Rue McClanahan stars as Mother Superior Sister Mary Regina, a stuffy type who lightens up considerably after sniffing an illegal substance (after struggling to find the correct nomenclature to introduce the next number, she gives up and says: "we'll just watch a coupla butch nuns dance"). While there are no rulers, there is a quiz from Sister Mary Amnesia (a forgetful nun), a series of Sister impressions creatively using the wimple (such as Sister Pippi Longstocking), the aforementioned dancing nuns (in high heels!), and some scathing humor (when the Mother Superior reads a recipe for Mary Magdalene Tarts from the BVM--Blessed Virgin Mary--cookbook, her second-in-command quips "betcha they're easy." After a beat, the Mother Superior adds "and cheap.") You don't have to be Catholic to enjoy this loving send-up of convent culture; you just need to have a working sense of humor. Highly recommended. Also available in a two-tape set with the sequel Nunsense 2 for $29.95. Aud: C, P. (R. Pitman)
