Spalding Gray stars as the stage manager in this 1989 Tony-award winning version of Thornton Wilder's classic play about small-town Americana near the turn of the century. For those who have seen MasterVision's 1977 version (VL-3/86) with Hal Holbrook as the stage manager/narrator there's no comparison. Holbrook's reading is broader, wiser, and ultimately, comforting; Gray's reading is banal, lacking in conviction, and ultimately, distancing. Still, there are other advantages to the newer version, and larger collections will want both. Recommended. (R. Pitman)
