Robby Henson's beautifully crafted Civil War story explores the human face of war when a small Yankee patrol arrives at Sarah Anders' (Patricia Clarkson) farm to "requisition" supplies. Anders, whose husband is fighting for the rebel side, is already enraged because Yankee sympathizers have dug up the grave of her dead daughter as a protest for having a rebel family living in their midst. When one of the patrol soldiers is hurt, and the band is forced to lay up at the farm, the leader Captain Abston (Chris Cooper) offers to help with one hand, even as he takes with the other. As the film moves towards its powerful climax, viewers get a real appreciation for the complex issues--practical and emotional--which divided the country, setting neighbor against neighbor. Highly recommended. (R. Pitman)
