Over 40 critics placed Krysztof Kieslowski's final film in his "Three Colors" trilogy on their 10 best lists. Wrong. Blue was glacially slow, but White was one of my favorite films of the year. With Red, however, Kieslowski once again abandons interesting characters and clever plotting in favor of forced philosophizing and quasi-mystical claptrap. Irene Jacob (the camera stays on her face long enough for some lifeforms to evolve) carries on a running conversation with a retired judge (Jean-Louis Trintignant) who has a penchant for electronic eavesdropping. It rings false from the get. Still, people may be looking for this; an optional purchase. (R. Pitman)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
