A young man (Tuo Zhong Hua) walks into a police precinct to confess a crime that happened some ten years ago: namely, his mother poisoned his father. So begins this intriguing Chinese mystery based on a true story. Director Yim Ho's beautifully lensed whodunit peels away the many layers of Guan Jin's (Hua) story, as the local police captain decides to re-open the case, with surprising results. Part Oedipal psychological drama with more than a touch of Hamlet, part twisty low-key thriller, The Day the Sun Turned Cold is an absorbing study of the ties that bind (and come unbound). Highly recommended. (R. Pitman)
