Anthony Hopkins is wasted (and totally unbelievable as an American secret agent) in this Cold War thriller based on Ian McEwan's novel. Campbell Scott stars as the innocent Brit agent who falls head over wiretap for the lovely German girl, Maria (Isabella Rossellini), in postwar Berlin, and learns that business and pleasure don't always mix well in the world of espionage. Film buffs will, however, enjoy the Casablanca homage with Rossellini (Ingrid Bergman's daughter). A very optional purchase. (R. Bottom line: a disappointing adaptation of Ian McEwan's titular thriller.]
