Breakdowns. Negatives. Pre-exhaustion. Are we having fun yet? Instructors Dana Brown and Dan Drury take viewers to the next level in strength training: complete muscular failure (I'm not kidding; that's the objective). Aimed at weight trainers who have reached a certain level of fitness (i.e., not you; not me), Advanced Strength Training is targeted at people who have essentially reached a plateau in their strength training programs. In the short (but not sweet) exercises demonstrated here, Brown and Drury show viewers how to really push themselves with slow reps, the aforementioned breakdowns (exhaust the muscle, remove 20% of the weight, repeat) and--one of my favorites--negatives. Doing "negatives," your partner holds the weight down while you try to push it up adding that extra little incentive you need to wring his or her bull neck. Jokes aside, the trainers really do offer fine instruction here, coupled with plenty of safety tips and a guide to the warning signs of overtraining. The third tape in a 3-part set (the others are Keys to Superior Strength and High-Volume Training; series priced at $69.95), this top-notch production is recommended. Aud: P. (R. Pitman)
