For those who know their crochet terms, "granny squares" are not straitlaced elderly women, but one of the popular building blocks of crochet projects ranging from afghans to baby blankets. Seamstress Dianne Hills demonstrates the basic stitches, and guides viewer's step-by-step through the creation of their first two granny squares in this solid introduction to crocheting ("crochet" incidentally is a French term meaning "what our grandmothers did when they didn't want to be bothered with a bunch of mewling brats like us"). Although Hills seems uncomfortable with the camera initially, she settles into the role once the crochet hooks start weaving their magic, and she routinely offers encouragement to viewers along the way. Not quite as good as Crocheting From Start to Finish*ing (VL-5/93)--which is also about $15 more expensive--Classic Crochet still does the job. Recommended. (R. Pitman)

As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
