The second title in The Development of Christian Symbolism series (see Madonna and Child [VL-1/93]), this pictorial guide to religious sculpture, with a focus on the art found in medieval European churches, combines close-up views and voice-over narration to illuminate the symbolism depicting key events in Christ's crucifixion and resurrection. Written by Professor of Art History Lois Swan-Jones, the video examines Old Testament prophecies of the coming Messiah, followed by Christ's baptism, miracles, entrance into Jerusalem, and crucifixion (prior to the late Gothic period, Christ's divinity was emphasized over his mortality, and therefore his suffering was not usually depicted. The second half of the tape focuses on Christ's entombment, the symbols of the cross, and the sightings following his resurrection. Though more scholarly than mainstream, this is recommended for larger collections with substantial holdings in the area of religious art and architecture. (R. Pitman)
