There's a lot of truth to the old chestnut that you learn something new every day, and if you're a video reviewer that goes quadruple. I didn't think, for instance, that I'd ever hear the words "back up your data" in a music instruction video, but those are host Joseph Rothstein's nuggets of wisdom regarding the floppy disk drive which is now a standard feature on many new keyboards. Rothstein introduces viewers to the world of digital music instruments (keyboards, synthesizers, drum machines, wind controllers) and the devices which interpret and playback the music...or rather, the data. Separated into icon-coded chapters, Digital Musical Instruments and the World of MIDI offers a fascinating overview of the one of the most exciting new frontiers in music today: Musical Instrument Digital Interface, or MIDI. In addition to defining and displaying the various components in a MIDI setup, and showing viewers the basics of connecting it all into a versatile MIDI system, the program demonstrates how even a simple system can lay down 16 separate tracks, creating a multi-instrument full-bodied song out of one keyboard and a few black boxes. An excellent tour of the world of MIDI, and a more current guide than Composing With MIDI (VL-6/91). Highly recommended. (R. Pitman)
