Television personality and wine aficionado Dave Eckert and Master Sommelier/Master of Wine Doug Frost join forces to offer viewers tips on which wines go with what foods. Using a simple wine/food formula ("light with light," "medium with medium," and "heavy with heavy"), Frost expounds on the pluses and minuses of various wines and how they work with certain foods. a Sauvignon Blanc is a good choice with smoked salmon (assuming you like smoked salmon) because most other wines can't compete against the strong taste; likewise in selecting a wine to go with turkey, Frost recommends a "Riesling that has the ability to fight back." The program is divided into three segments: the wine shop, the grocery store, and the restaurant, where Eckert and Frost explore vino-related topics. a companion booklet, available separately for an additional $4.95 is actually more useful than the video. The latter, which takes a hand-held camera, fast-talking, MTV-style approach, tends to bounce around a lot, subject-wise, and therefore doesn't present the best access for someone seeking information on a particular wine or food. The booklet and the video together would work, but the video doesn't stand well alone. An optional purchase. Wine: Pure & Simple--Your Video Guide to Selecting Wine (VL-11/90) is a better though more aged choice. (R. Pitman)
