A teacher presenting a module on current affairs in Bosnia can begin by closing the textbook: it's dated before the ink dries on the first copy at the printers. As an alternative, teachers scan newspapers and magazines for current information. But, what if that info was readily available? That's the implicit promise in the Internet--a virtual Yellow Pages of detailed information, where you let your fingers do the mouse button clicking. From the makers of Information Superhighway (VL-11/94), this new program combines an entertaining tour from an amiable host together with commentary from educators who are using the Internet in the classroom in a wide variety of ways. While cautioning (and consoling) beleaguered teachers that the Internet is not ideal for all classroom situations--it's a tool, not a replacement--the program shares some interesting ideas for using the Internet, such as learning about students in other countries through e-mail, following local legislation, and participating in interactive expeditions (such as MayaQuest, in which real-time cameras and e-mail allowed students and expeditioners to communicate as discoveries were being made). Although a lot of concern is being expressed over pornography on the Internet, one educator reminds others that, in the case of his students, "it's not just can we find the pictures of naked women." Many students are using the Internet as a serious research tool. Like Information Superhighway (which featured plugs for Internet in a Box), Internet for Educators also has a commercial sponsor, "The Speakeasy Cafe."
