‘Ladies, lead with the toe when stepping back while dancing with your partner,' counsels veteran dance instructor Mary Lou Kaye; this lessens the chances that the gentleman will step on your foot. In this simple, unadorned, low-budget production Kaye and her partner demonstrate basic dance steps that viewers can use at weddings and special events--anytime that dancing is announced and the viewer's feet feel like they've got a mind of their own. Using a very simple set--a section of dance floor--Kaye teaches viewers how to move with the music, perform basic and turning box steps, promenades, and other steps. The demonstrations are performed with the instructor's back to the audience, making it easy to follow along. Though very pedestrian, production-wise, Learn Basic Social Dance gets the job done, and Kaye is a gifted and humorous teacher. Recommended. Kaye also has a three-part Polka dance series and a Wedding Dancing tape available. Aud: P. (R. Pitman)
