"Love at first sight may be fun, but I suggest you take a second look," advises Dr. Leo Buscaglia, the noted professor, lecturer, and author, dubbed the "hug therapist." a filmed lecture before a live audience, based on Buscaglia's best-selling book Born for Love, the self-help guru's presentation is an amiable mix of popular psychology and good old common sense. Bemoaning the increasing fragmentation of society, and citing the increase of third marriages, Buscaglia exhorts his listeners to understand that love is hard work. Those who aren't willing to work at love are also not likely to sustain it. Punctuating his presentation with memorable personal anecdotes about his Italian childhood, his return to Italy as an adult, and contemporary experiences of daily life, Buscaglia underscores simple truths (love is neither a given nor a right, laughter is necessary for the good life, etc.) that we often seem to forget. While it's easy to chide him for being overly simplistic at times, his books are probably doing more for people than a whole host of scholarly treatises on the subject. Sure to be very popular. Highly recommended. (R. Pitman)
