According to the host, "surveys indicate that almost every American woman has experienced sexual harassment, from 50 to nearly 90%." But what this really indicates is that someone didn't read the script very closely. The host, who speaks in an overemphasized theatrical way that's very distracting, defines the two areas legally recognized as sexual harassment (hostile environment and quid pro quo), and the program talks with attorneys about the law and sexual harassment victims about their experiences (one victim's story is very coherent and informative; the other's--involving a woman who hired an attorney who had represented her in a previous case of sexual harassment to represent her for a second unrelated case of sexual harassment, and was then sexually harassed by her lawyer and went looking for another lawyer to bring suit against the first--is very confusing). Instead of using a series of shorter skits representing various forms of sexual harassment (as the far superior Dealing With Sexual Harassment in the Workplace, reviewed in our April 1993 issue, does), Sexual Harassment: Crossing the Line offers a pair of brief student/teacher skits and a long, repetitive, work-related skit. While the program has a strong conclusion, investigating the avenues of action available to the victim of sexual harassment, the overall presentation is flawed. Dealing With Sexual Harassment in the Workplace is a better choice. Not a necessary purchase. (R. Pitman)
