It's 8:48. You've got 12 minutes to drop little Julie off at the day care and make it to work. Julie, however, has other plans, none of which actually include changing from pajamas to clothes. In order for this to become a win-win situation, you've got to do some pretty serious negotiating, pronto. The Positive Working Family, presented by author and consultant Connierae Andreas, Ph.D., offers six methods for dealing with uncooperative children that don't involve tanned fannies or becoming your child's personal slave. Combining talking-head and text, the program covers providing choices, offering rewards (not bribes; you never give goodies to make a child stop bad behavior, but you might suggest that you'll read the child a story later on, after she's cleaned her room), and using redirection, among other techniques. In addition, mini-scripts are presented for several common situations, including getting the child out of bed, ready on time, into the car, doing chores, eating right, and ready for bed, as well as suggestions for handling whining, disobedience, and fighting. Although the talking-head and text aspects make this a pretty uninspired use of the visual medium, the information is good, the techniques practical, and the examples are ready made for use by parents who are trying to juggle careers, family, and child-rearing at the same time. Recommended. (R. Pitman)
