"Very few comprehensive materials exist to guide the novice consumer" in purchasing a personal computer. Excuse me? This comment, culled from the opening remarks of this primarily talking-head guide (except for lots of close-ups of the Gateway 2000 PC), seems a tad out of touch with reality, but otherwise the program keeps its feet on the ground in its basic explanations of what a personal computer is, and a breakdown of the hardware and software necessary and/or available for PC's. But, while the information is solid, the presentation is less than optimal: presenters are clearly reading from a script which sounds as if it was written for the page not the screen, and there are a few mistakes (such as pronouncing "unit" as "eunuch"). Low-budget, with a semi-amateur feel, this is not recommended. [Note: this is being sold to consumers for $19.95.] Better recent choices here might be Buying a Computer? A Guide to Doing it Right (VL-7/95) and Computer 101 for Technical Dunces (VL-1/96). Aud: P. (R. Pitman)
