While Good Morning America: The Healthy Male--Prostate Cancer (VL-9/94) and What Every Man Should Know About His Prostate, Including Cancer (VL-5/95) both concentrated on the physical side of prostate cancer, this new program from Medcom looks at the emotional side, with particular emphasis on the role of the spouse or significant other in helping the patient weather the battle. Combining interviews with six couples and medical professionals, the program begins by reminding viewers of the high 5-year survival rate (92% in cases of early detection), and then looks at the psychological upheaval caused by the diagnosis, touches on the treatments available, and underscores the importance of emotional support. The final third of the video discusses impotence and incontinence. While never descending into happy talk, When Someone You Love Has Prostate Cancer does offer an affirmative, understanding, and hopeful approach to the subject. Highly recommended. (R. Pitman)
