Liquidity. Safety. Return. The magic words in the world of investments. This 3-volume series, hosted by Sheila Stainback, looks at Investment Basics, An Introduction to Mutual Funds, and Financial Planning for Women. We watched Investment Basics, in which Stainback interviewed Bill Bresnan, a financial radio talk show host, and Dana Messina, of Reich & Tang Mutual Funds. The program explored various investment options, including a wide array of stock types, mutual funds, and bonds, as well as futures, options, and real estate. While the information was fairly plentiful, the format is deadly dull. Bresnan and Stainback--both media professionals--are able to somewhat disguise the fact that they're reading directly from a TelePrompTer; Messina cannot, and it makes for a very stiff, mechanical sounding presentation. Except for the use of a limited amount of on-screen graphic examples, the programs are entirely talking head. Although these would be suitable optional purchases, there are better choices available, including Understanding the Basics: Mutual Funds (VL-3/95) and Your Personal Survival Guide on Planning to Save (VL-7/95).
