"A vast electronic community without boundaries," the Internet offers a little something for everybody from the student doing research to the opera attendee who wants to scope out the best seats in the theater. This hip introduction takes viewers through the obligatory history of Arpanet and other evolutionary steps of the Net, explains the differences between shell (text only) and SLIP/*** accounts (which offer graphic capabilities), explores the World Wide Web, and touches on the subjects of e-mail, Usenet newsgroups, netiquette and various search engines and file transfer options. The down side is that, while the program is a very handsomely produced and solid beginner's guide, the price is three to four times higher than what you'd pay for any number of similar efforts. Better choices here are: The Video Guide to the Internet (VL-3/95) and Cyber Surfin': Internet for the Rest of Us (VL-11/95), both priced at $19.95. Your First Cruise is only recommended for libraries with exhaustive collections on the subject and whopping budgets. (R. Pitman)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
