"A toad is a dolphin in the eyes of its mother," host Peter Cascone reminds us, and while I'm not sure exactly what that means, it's something I'll certainly tell my mom the next time she calls. Fortunately there's more than obscure maternal sayings on hand in Your Video Guide to Buying a Diamond, a sparkling tour of the do's and don'ts of purchasing really expensive and small (though admittedly pretty) rocks. Viewers will learn about the four C's: carat weight, clarity, cut and color, as well as the unacknowledged fifth C (cost). They'll discover that a diamond with 56 facets is two cuts shy of a correctly cut stone, an easy way to detect cubic zirconia, where to get an inexpensive and current guide to weekly prices, and how to save a bundle of bucks by buying diamonds just under the major weight divisions (a 1.4 carat diamond will cost you a whole lot less, for instance, than a 1.5 carat stone will). Amiable narration, good visuals, and straight information make this a good choice. Recommended. (R. Pitman)
