Jim Powell hosts this three-tape set aimed at teaching novice parent/coaches the basics of coaching youth football teams, from proper attitude (don't try to relive your gridiron glory days) to specific drills (send everybody on wind sprints; the fastest kids are probably going to form your offensive backfield). Several youth football coaches headquartered in Murphy, North Carolina, together with special guests, including New Orleans Saints' quarterback Heath Shuler, offer informal commentary on teamwork, coaching philosophies, and the importance of safety, while other segments provide actual demonstrations of basic techniques and drills highlighting offense and defense fundamentals. While the informality of the coaches discussing various topics does lead to a little unnecessary repetition, this is a good program, overall, and though this 100 minute program probably didn't need to be spread across three tapes, the fact that the programs are divided into The Basics, Offense and Defense will be helpful to viewers focusing on particular areas.
