British doll artists Paul Crees and Peter Coe are interviewed by collector Linda Dyer in this rather slow chat about the properties of wax, the differences between doll designers and doll artists, and the history of the duo's work in wax sculpted dolls based on literary or motion picture figures. According to Crees, he is trying to capture a "fixed moment of beauty," and the success is evident in the exquisite representations of Vivian Leigh, Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, and others shown during the final third of the interview. Unfortunately, the viewer has to sit through the first 20 minutes. Neither Crees nor Coe seem particularly enthused about their subject nor even very interested; ergo, we are no more involved in the conversation than they seem to be. Ah, but the dolls displayed in those last 10 minutes; those are truly lovely, and they help make up for the dullness which has gone before. Recommended, with reservations, for larger arts and crafts collections. (R. Pitman)
