While "I love having my nose sucked" may be, in the immortal words of Pulp Fiction's Uma Thurman ‘more information than we needed,' the honesty of the sentiment is one of the hallmarks of this fine series which played on British television (but would give Jesse Helms a stroke if it aired here). We watched the opening volume, which contained the programs "Sexual Habits" and "Size--Is it Important?" While steering clear of any hardcore material, The Good Sex Guide--saucily hosted by Marci Clarke--tells it like it is (according to a survey, half of the women polled have faked orgasms) and uses outrageous skits to make educational points. In one sequence, modeled after the game "pin the tail on the donkey," males attempt to place a dot showing where they think the clitoris is on a drawing of the female sex organs. What's scary is the incredible number of misses. What's even scarier is the fact that none of these blokes are wearing blindfolds. And during the episode on penis size, Clarke enters a room full of showering males with a object far more frightening than an Uzi: a tape measure. Other subjects include "Sexual Etiquette," "Mismatched Sex Drives," and "Sexual Fidelity." Winner of a Silver Award from the British Medical Association, the series will no doubt rile some feathers (they don't appear to be using stunt penises), but this is far, far better than the ridiculous Better Sex Video Series (VL-4/93) or the equally ludicrous Making Love Series With Dr. Ruth Westheimer (VL-11/95). [Note: a second 3-vol. series is also available.] Highly recommended. Aud: P. (R. Pitman)
